We will also be presenting on this occasion a stunning collection of Russian paintings, notably works by Natalia Gontcharova:

« Russian cubo-futurism »

In 1913 the third exposition of the Golden Fleece is entirely devoted to Russian craftsmanship and paintings by Muscovite artists.

Natalia Gontcharova explores a greater expressivity by drawing on popular tradition, children’s drawings, village scenes, the subjects of popular imagery, for the work titled “Le Parc en Hiver”, created circa 1909. The simplicity of line and color highlight the vigor of primal creativity. The influence of Italian Futurism can already be felt in Russia at the same time as French Cubism. Natalia Gontcharova finds inspiration for her work La Trotinette at the intersection of these two movements. It is at this time that Natalia and her companion Mikail Larionov experiment with a new visual vocabulary, developing a new style: “Rayonnism”.

The artist shows a factory worker on a cycle. We see the same desire to resort to a modern subject, the use of telephone numbers and industrial lettering in the background. The horizon lines and superimposing images suggest a trajectory, the movement of a man on his machine. The style of this work is a rare example of Russian Cubo-Futurism.
