Conceptualized by Jean Dubuffet, the term Art Brut refers to a type of art produced by both male and female artists operating outside the realm of fine art - schools, art fairs and art dealing business. Those self-taught, “outsider” artists only found inspiration in their own spontaneous worldview, which some consider delirious while others see the imprints of great visionaries. Adolph Wölfli, Aloïse Corbaz, Augustin Lesage, Madge Gill, Janko Domsic are some of its most representative artists. The Art Brut movement has deeply influenced both artists such as Max Ernst, Asger Jorn, Jean Tinguely, George Baselitz as well as the history of art.
The "Neuve Invention" (New Invention) or Art Singulier – another art category coined by Jean Dubuffet to distinguish this type of art from the more unruly Art Brut – defines artists who refused to follow the tradition of academic art and sought inspiration in the extraordinary inventiveness of Art Brut and in the treasures of popular cultures. Gaston Chaissac is one of its most renowned artists.
This sale will enable collectors to acquire works that have seldom or never been offered on the market- e.g. works by Jaime Fernandes, Zdenek Kosek. It will also give a chance to new Art Brut or Art Singulier lovers to choose from a wide selection of high quality works.
