This auction focuses on China, as not only a country of long history with an elaborate civilisation, but also as the country of origin of many technical inventions and a spot full of artistic diversity, which has influenced the occidental arts in general during the centuries. China has been very progressive regarding the exploration of new materials and processes. It was the first country using varnish already in 4000 before J.C. Especially France imitated this treatment for their furniture in the 18th century. And it is also China, where the technique for fabricating porcelain was invented. Later the occident would apply the same procedure massively in an analogous manner. The decorative richness echoes for example in the indication �� la chinoise�. Contrary to the occident with its recognized carpenters, designers and inventors, China does not pay a lot of attention to their creators. They are mostly anonymous. With its delicate lines and volumes the designs don�t want to provoke an effect. They are just focusing on their function. Not surprisingly, that a lot of art and crafts movements during Modernity drew their inspiration from the Chinese Arts.
