    Notes:
Historique : "A long record of acclaim, scholarship, and steady acquisition by public institutions gives Wendell Castle’s work indelible historic importance. His groundbreaking unification of sculpture and furniture galvanized generations of artists and designers and contributed to the acceptance of design as an art form in its own right. At every stage however, Castle has endeavored to incorporate innovations in materials and design, while deepening and, at times, re-inventing his own sculptural vocabulary. From his iconic Molar Chair (1969) to Faust (2009), Castle’s work has often reflected sociological and cultural developments in pop culture, film and music… "Recently, contemporary works have been acquired by major museums including : the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston, TX) ; Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution’s (New York, NY) : Brooklyn Museum (Brooklyn, NY) ; and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (Kansas City, MO)." A unique masterpiece, Faust belongs to the Rockin' series, the most iconic body of work produced over the past decade by pioneer of American Studio Furniture and contemporary design, Wendell Castle. Works from Castle's Rockin' series are featured in both group and solo museum exhibitions, namely the traveling exhibition, Against the Grain : Wood in Contemporary Craft and Design currently at the Museum of Art and Design, NY ; and Wendell Castle in the 21st Century at the Belger Arts Center. Castle was prompted to revisit the rocker theme after an encounter with one of his earliest works, Sleigh Lounger, 1963. He was struck by the notion of speed suggested by the continuous shape of its supports and decided to emphasize the quality. Calling on his passion for vintage racecars, Castle noted : "A great depiction of speed comes from the early twentieth-century photographer, [Jacques-Henri] Lartigue. He took a famous picture of a Bugatti racing car and it appears as if the wheels are tilted and turning forward. So I tried to give everything a forward movement".
