The Art Institute of Chicago (inv. 20 C 1988.503) puis vente, Sotheby's New York, 6 mai 2004, lot 140.

"How I perceive the figure. This title could very well have been changed to: 'The key ring in Léger’s work,' or 'The bicycle in Leger’s work.' By that I mean that the human figure, the human body, is no more important to me than keys or bicycles. Truly. These are plastically valid objects that I may use as I see fit. We must accept that the pictorial traditions that precede us - the figure and the landscape - are charged with affect. Why It is the landscape in which we have lived, these are figures and portraits that hang on the walls, from which arose the initial sentimental value that has spawned a considerable number of good, bad, or debatable paintings. To form a clear idea, modern artists have had to disengage from this sentimental influence. We have overcome this obstacle: the object has replaced the subject; abstract art ushered in a total liberation, and the human figure can now be considered not as a sentimental value, but solely as a plastic value. This is why the human figure has remained intentionally inexpressive in my work as it has progressed from 1905 to the present. I know that this very radical conception of the figure-object outrages many people, but I can do nothing about it. In my latest paintings, which depict figures linked to subjects, perhaps you will find that the human figure tends to become the main object. The future will decide if this is a plastic improvement or if it is a mistake. In any case, the current system is still dominated by contrasting values that must justify this progression."
