à décor polychrome et lustré, sur la droite Cupidon, les yeux bandés attachés à un arbre, son carquois et son arc brisé à ses pieds, à gauche, deux amours, l'un décochant une flèche, au centre un Amour tenant un arc dans un médaillon sur fond lustré ocre.
Signé et daté au revers en lustre rouge: 1525 M°G° pour Maestro Giorgio.

  • Le putto attaché représentant Cupidon est une image classique de l'Amour à la Renaissance, ses yeux bandés figurant que les amants ignorent où ils vont, qu'ils n'ont aucun jugement et ne sont conduits par aucun discernement mais par la seule passion.
    Les Amours sont à rapprocher de l'Amour au centre d'une coupe de Gubbio, conservée au British Museum, également datée 1525 et que John Mallet attribue au peintre Xanto Avelli (Voir John Mallet, " Xanto and Gubbio, New Thoughts and Queries ", Keramos, 186, octobre 2004, pp. 37-60 et John Mallet, Xanto Pottery Painter, Poet, Man of the Italian Renaissance, 2007, n° 7, p. 60-61.
    Jusqu'à récemment, la vie de Francesco Xanto Avelli était peu renseignée. Reconnu comme un peintre de poterie, un poète, impliqué dans la politique et étroitement lié avec Francesco Maria I della Rovere, duc d'Urbino, Xanto était un véritable homme de la Renaissance. Fait rare pour un potier, il a étudié les Classiques, choisissant souvent des thèmes de la mythologie, de l'histoire ancienne et de l'actualité comme sujets de sa peinture. Il figure parmi les très grands peintres d'istoriato sur la majolique. Le nom complet de Xanto comprend souvent les mots " da Rovigo ", ce qui indique qu'il vient de cette ville. Mais pour autant que l'on puisse déterminer, il a surtout travaillé dans et autour d'Urbino. Il fut l'un des premiers peintres maïoliques à signer et dater son œuvre, signe qu'il se considérait comme un artiste plutôt qu'un artisan.
    Le catalogue de John V.G. Mallet pour l'exposition Xanto tenue à la Wallace Collection au printemps 2007, est la première monographie consacrée à Xanto Avelli.
