Table For Two: Tajan & Le Bon Marché

“Art de la table” is the theme chosen for the upcoming auction at Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche organised by the renowned Tajan auction house on 15 June 2023. These two jewels of Art Deco heritage share the excellence of French savoir-faire. This singular alliance was achieved under the watchful and benevolent eye of Gilbert Kann, furniture consultant for twentieth-century decorative arts, renowned for his acute taste and sense of staging.

Among the highlights of the sale are the prototypes of a dinner service produced for the Elysée Palace in 1991. On the back of each unique piece, enhanced with Sèvres blue, are engraved the signature of the artisan-tourneur, the Sèvres Manufacture service stamp and, of course, the Elysée seal. “Each of the eighty plates that make up the service is hand-painted,” explains French artist Zaven Paré, who was responsible not only for the prestigious commission but also for the illustration on the cover of the auction catalogue.

Around 120 lots were brought together by Marie-Cécile Michel, head of the 20th-century decorative arts and design department at Tajan. A collector of the French ceramist Pol Chambost (1906-1983) donated the first pieces, and rare items from the 1950s and 1960s, which are now highly prized, were then collected. These included sets of Baccarat glasses, Christofle and Puiforcat silverware, fine wines, and even the very contemporary Oursinade table by Atelier Marthe, which won a public award at the Design Parade 2022 in Toulon.

The exhibition runs from June 9 to 15, on the second floor of the Bon Marché Rive Gauche, above La Grande Épicerie, not far from the restaurant La Table run by chef Cédric Erimée. For one week, each day, a new setting and a new atmosphere will be offered to visitors. Something to tickle the imagination and the taste buds. Is it possible to enjoy a meal without a well-laid table? The sale is aimed at collectors and gourmets who appreciate earthenware, silverware and unique signed pieces.

After all, isn’t the French gastronomic meal part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage? A deserved reputation that this sale aims to maintain at the highest level.
