On the off white, initially coated canvas, large strips of black cover a part of the painting\u2019s surface. Through the use of\u00a0special brushes and\u00a0spatulas, Pierre Soulages<\/strong> gradually unveils and reveals in part the hidden ochre layer, playing with transparencies and offering an infinite variation of colours with unexpected luminosities.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n

Acquired on the occasion of the exhibition at Galerie de France in 1960 by James<\/strong> Johnson Sweeney<\/strong>, the well-known art critic, curator\u00a0and Director\u00a0of\u00a0Painting and Sculpture\u00a0at the MoMA<\/strong> from 1940\u00a0to 1945\u00a0and director of the Guggenheim<\/strong> from 1952 to 1960, it has since been held in the same family.
