{"id":905,"date":"2019-10-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-10-03T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tajan.com\/https-www-tajan-com-fr-news-dona-nelson-days-textures-and-patterns\/"},"modified":"2021-02-22T15:41:52","modified_gmt":"2021-02-22T15:41:52","slug":"dona-nelson-days-textures-and-patterns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tajan.com\/fr\/dona-nelson-days-textures-and-patterns\/","title":{"rendered":"Dona Nelson : Days, textures and patterns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Gallery \u00e0 le plaisir d&rsquo;acceuillir, pour la premi\u00e8re fois \u00e0 Paris, une exposition d\u00e9di\u00e9e \u00e0 l&rsquo;artiste am\u00e9ricaine Dona Nelson.\u00a0<strong>Brooks Adams<\/strong>, chroniqueur au\u00a0<em>Art in America<\/em>, revient\u00a0sur le parcours et l&rsquo;oeuvre de l&rsquo;artiste contemporaine.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0Tout au long des cinq derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies, <strong>Dona Nelson<\/strong> s\u2019est certainement r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9e \u00eatre l\u2019une des peintres vivantes les plus acharn\u00e9es dans ses recherches, rigoureusement idiosyncratique et techniquement inventive. Ses peintures r\u00e9centes, d\u2019une inspiration hyper-mat\u00e9rialiste, souvent translucides, recto verso et suspendues dans l\u2019espace, sont devenues des r\u00e9f\u00e9rences, notamment lors de la Biennale du Whitney de 2014, pour les peintres plus jeunes cherchant \u00e0 \u00e9tendre les possibilit\u00e9s exp\u00e9rimentales de l\u2019\u00e9cole de New-York. Sa technique combine le pinceau et de longs morceaux\u00a0de ficelle nou\u00e9e et peinte traversant la toile. Elle synth\u00e9tise les notions d\u00e9su\u00e8tes \u00ab d\u2019ouvrages f\u00e9minins \u00bb (courtepointes, broderies) avec les grandes ambitions d\u2019un <strong>Jackson Pollock<\/strong>. Nelson emploie librement les techniques de dripping et de taches, ainsi que l\u2019automatisme psychique. Elle semble pr\u00eate \u00e0 tout pour maintenir vivante la pratique de la peinture abstraite.<\/p>\n<p>La vie de l\u2019artiste est clairement visible dans ses oeuvres des ann\u00e9es 80 : elle a d\u00e9marr\u00e9 en tant que peintre abstrait dans les ann\u00e9es 70, puis emprunta un tournant \u00e0 360 degr\u00e9s vers la figuration. L\u2019hyper-mat\u00e9rialisme et l\u2019autobiographie se rejoignent \u00e0 nouveau dans ses abstractions r\u00e9centes qui sont, en quelque sorte, \u00e9galement figuratives. Ces objets suspendus et autonomes ont une pr\u00e9sence corporelle. Le travail des ann\u00e9es 80 est aussi \u00e9tonnamment pr\u00e9monitoire ; Imaginez Familiar Trees (1985) de Nelson comme un nouveau pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent de Two Trees (2017) de Peter Doig.<\/p>\n<p>Les peintures de la sc\u00e8ne am\u00e9ricaine des ann\u00e9es 80 sont, sous un regard attentif, multivalentes et pleines d\u2019\u00e9vocations visuelles. Les \u00e9l\u00e9ments internes ne concordent pas tout \u00e0 fait. Dans Cold Busy Street (1984), une silhouette en pardessus est nettement empathique, de m\u00eame que les \u00e9normes mains violettes se r\u00e9chauffant au-dessus d\u2019un feu jaune vif dans un tonneau. Un manteau rouge au rendu prismatique se termine en pantalon violet sans pieds. Au-dessus, pendent un trio de chaussures sans corps : deux violettes \u00e0 tiges hautes et un mocassin orange. Ces \u00e9l\u00e9ments tronqu\u00e9s insolites sugg\u00e8rent un r\u00e9alisme urbain brut et une vision du monde en juxtaposition de fragments urbains.<\/p>\n<div class=\"media media-element-container media-default\">\n<div id=\"file-38208\" class=\"file file-image file-image-jpeg\">\n<h2 class=\"element-invisible\"><a href=\"\/fr\/files\/image\/selection1jpg-2\">selection1.jpg<\/a><\/h2>\n<div class=\"content\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-default\" title=\"dona nelson expo\" src=\"https:\/\/image.invaluable.com\/privatelabel\/tajan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/09205405\/selection1_2.jpg\" alt=\"dona nelson expo\" width=\"950\" height=\"502\" data-delta=\"2\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>L\u2019hyper-mat\u00e9rialit\u00e9 gagne du terrain dans les peintures des ann\u00e9es 90. La r\u00e9alisation de surfaces faites d\u2019\u00e9toffes et de gel semblait chim\u00e9rique \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, surtout pour des oeuvres abstraites. Que recherchait Nelson ? Decorative Octopus (1991) nous offre un rare moment d\u2019intelligibilit\u00e9. Le cloisonnisme des aplats de couleurs vives, rouge, jaune, violet et vert, apparait bien marqu\u00e9, mais il est en fait r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par l\u2019apposition d\u2019une myriade de bandes de coton teint\u00e9es sur une toile de support. Nelson a peint toute une s\u00e9rie\u00a0 de peintures de pieuvres au cours de ces ann\u00e9es, dont certaines sont presque abstraites. Dans cet exemple, la nature obsessionnelle de la technique, ainsi que les images r\u00e9sultantes aux couleurs satur\u00e9es et motifs labyrinthiques, nous font penser \u00e0 l\u2019<strong>Outsider Art<\/strong> ou \u00e0 l\u2019Art Brut.<\/p>\n<p>Nous pouvons voir aujourd\u2019hui que le travail de <strong>Nelson<\/strong> pr\u00e9sente des affinit\u00e9s ind\u00e9niables avec l\u2019expressionnisme abstrait de deuxi\u00e8me g\u00e9n\u00e9ration, r\u00e9cemment \u00e9voqu\u00e9 dans un ouvrage magistral de Mary Gabriel, Ninth Street Women: Lee Krasner, Elaine DeKooning, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell and Helen Frankenthaler: Five Painters and the Movement That Changed Modern Art (2018). Ce serait Hartigan qui est soudainement devenu figuratif apr\u00e8s un d\u00e9but abstrait ; Krasner qui a d\u00e9coup\u00e9 ses peintures rat\u00e9es et les a ensuite r\u00e9utilis\u00e9es ; Frankenthaler, pionni\u00e8re des techniques de taches color\u00e9es ; et Mitchell avec ses joyeuses odes \u00e0 la nature. Nelson a int\u00e9rioris\u00e9 toutes les luttes et triomphes de ces artistes.<\/p>\n<p>Ses peintures double face ont \u00e9galement des r\u00e9sonnances internationales. <strong>Pierre Soulages<\/strong> exp\u00e9rimente cette id\u00e9e depuis 1966, lorsqu\u2019il accroche pour la premi\u00e8re fois ses peintures sur des c\u00e2bles m\u00e9talliques. Plus tard il suspendra sa s\u00e9rie Outrenoir sous une forme identique, dos \u00e0 dos. Vers 1974, l\u2019artiste iranienne Behjat Sadr (1924-2009), qui a travaill\u00e9 \u00e0 Paris apr\u00e8s la r\u00e9volution de 1979, a peint une oeuvre abstraite double face sur panneau en aluminium (r\u00e9cemment expos\u00e9e \u00e0 Balice Hertling \u00e0 Paris). Cependant, les oeuvres double face de Nelson sont particuli\u00e8rement novatrices dans la mani\u00e8re dont les deux faces sont raccord\u00e9es \u00e0 la fois sur le plan conceptuel et artistique.<\/p>\n<p>Bien s\u00fbr la peinture double face n\u2019est pas une id\u00e9e nouvelle : les panneaux de la Renaissance sont souvent peints recto verso. Ces polyptyques sont des oeuvres \u00e0 panneaux multiples dont les c\u00f4t\u00e9s peuvent \u00eatre ouverts ou ferm\u00e9s et qui ressortent souvent en saillie dans l\u2019espace, tout comme le travail de Nelson lors de la Biennale du Whitney en 2014.<\/p>\n<div class=\"media media-element-container media-default\">\n<div id=\"file-38207\" class=\"file file-image file-image-jpeg\">\n<h2 class=\"element-invisible\"><a href=\"\/fr\/files\/image\/doublefacejpg\">doubleface.jpg<\/a><\/h2>\n<div class=\"content\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-default\" title=\"dona nelson\" src=\"https:\/\/image.invaluable.com\/privatelabel\/tajan\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/09205404\/doubleface.jpg\" alt=\"dona nelson\" width=\"950\" height=\"467\" data-delta=\"1\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Pour ma part, je fus soulag\u00e9 lorsqu\u2019en 2016 des figures monumentales et colossales sont r\u00e9apparues. Autumn Andrew (2016) repr\u00e9sente des personnages grandeur nature ou colossaux \u2013 certains de ces portraits peints \u00e0 partir d\u2019un mod\u00e8le \u2013 avec une pr\u00e9sence empirique intemporelle. Le spectateur est impliqu\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re nouvelle et active. En tournant autour des oeuvres double face, en se glissant entre deux totems sur leur socle en bois brut, nous mesurons nos propres mouvements \u00e0 ceux des personnages repr\u00e9sent\u00e9s.
