Entré à l'École des Beaux-Arts de Paris en 1852, Jules Didier est élève de Léon Cogniet et de Jules Laurens. Il emporte le Prix de Rome du Paysage historique en 1857 avec Jésus et la Samaritaine. Il séjourne en Italie de 1858 à 1861. Il obtient une médaille au Salon de Paris en 1869.
