"Bonnard is, to me, a painter whose body of work must constantly be revisited. He has played an important role in my work, and I often find myself looking at his paintings once again when I am considering what I am going to do. The exhibition at the Tate in 1998 gave me and Chris Ofili the opportunity to see his work again and again, since we went several times. I was awed by what the paintings exuded - unbeknownst to them : something open and unfinished. During our previous interview in Dusseldorf, I spoke about non-spectacular painting, by which I meant that Bonnard’s subjects appear ordinary, or rather that there is something intimate about them related to the painter and his world; however, this in large part accounts for the power of his work. Incidentally, I was surprised to see how much his work impacted young artists. It has a dark side that stood out to me when I visited the exhibition : a poignant melancholy that intensifies the longer you look at it. I returned to see the exhibition with other artists, mostly students. Much of the painting we see today flaunts the painter's skill. That is not the case with Bonnard. His work does not reveal to us how it was made, even if it is the process that absolutely defines what it is. Instead, there is a kind of ‘opening’ in the work. Ever since I began teaching in Dusseldorf, I have noticed that much of my students’ work begs the question of whether it is finished or not. I see the same thing in Bonnard's work."
