"L'ESCLAVE D'AMOUR"

“THE SLAVE OF LOVE"
Why is the little page covered with jewels? Jewellery historian Diana Scarisbrick has put forward a good hypothesis, which I have adopted. This image could be that of the "slave of love", a bold but pertinent statement about the gift given by a lover to his beloved.
The jewel we are presenting dates from the Directoire period and would have adorned a necklace known as "en esclavage". This notion of possessive love underlines the liberation of morals at the terrible end of the century. The fall of the Ancien Régime and its violence called for a need for peace and relaxation, writes Henri Vever, a historian but also a fine sociologist.
