Attribué à CARL LÉOPOLD MÜLLER (1834-1892) MARCHÉ au CAIRE MARKET IN CAIRO Huile sur toile. DIM. 90 X 120 cm (35.4 X 47 in.)

    Notes:
Austrian born in Germany, Müller studied at the Academy of Vienna and preferred painting images of daily life rather than the large historical frescoes preferred at the time. In 1873 he made his first voyage to Egypt, staying six months in Cairo. The light and its vibrant colors seemed in perfect harmony for Müller's colored touch. Painting Orientalist works rich in contrast and tonality allowed him to completely express his natural palette. Müller frequently returned to Egypt, where he was once presented to the Prince of Wales. Due to this fortuitous meeting, Müller become one of the wealthiest and most renowned Orientalist artists in London. Our painting most likely represents a study for Müller's great work currently in the Belvedere Collection in Vienna. This important work commissioned by the Austrian state is a beautiful illustration of the Occidental vision of the Orient, where the anecdotal mixes with the realism rendering an attractive work for an audience who believed the Orient to still be mysterious.
