“Les Francs-Tireurs de l’Art”: Bruts, Naïfs, Singuliers and other Outsiders

“Les Francs-Tireurs de l’Art”:

Bruts, Naïfs, Singuliers and other Outsiders

On April 10, 2024, the Modern Art department organized a sale at Tajan, in collaboration with Bruno Montpied, dedicated to the Francs-Tireurs de l’art.

Who are they? Who do they bring together?

The field of art has expanded since the dawn of the twentieth century: many self-taught artists of all kinds, outside the Beaux-Arts, have seduced modern artists and poets, then art dealers and collectors. From the Naïve Art of the 1930s to Jean Dubuffet’s Art Brut, launched in the aftermath of the Second World War, there has been a surge of creators ranging from the cultivated to the inspired vagabond.

Art Singulier, Outsider Art and Neuve Invention are the terms used to describe this tribe of creators who often resist classification. On April 10, many of them came to Tajan to submit their work to the vote of lovers of these talents, not always yet spotted.

From February 28 to March 8, 2024

In conjunction with the Outsider Art Fair, held from February 29 to March 3 in New York, Tajan presented a selection of highlights from the April 10, 2024 sale.

Bruno Montpied is an Art Brut specialist and essayist who regularly shares his research in articles for specialist magazines such as Création Franche, Artension, and on his blog Le Poignard subtil. He is at the origin of the attribution of the Barbüs Muller to Antoine Rabany, and co-author of the catalog Les Barbüs Muller published by the Musée Barbier-Müller in Geneva. He also authenticated a series of three new Barbüs Müller for Tajan in October 2023.

On February 27, Bruno Montpied honored us with a talk on these outsiders, at the opening of the “Highlights” exhibition of the Les Francs-Tireurs de l’Art sale, reviewing the origins of Art Brut and its various expressions in twentieth-century art.
