Discovering the Craft of Book Restoration

On the occasion of the Journées Marteau, Tajan is delighted to invite you to an exclusive conference–workshop dedicated to the art of book restoration, on Tuesday, May 26 from 9am. You will be welcomed with coffee before discovering, alongside book conservator Claire-Joëlle Hullin de Boischevalier, the subtleties of a craft that is as precious as it is little known. Through an engaging presentation, she will explore the specificities of her profession and the various types of bindings that can be restored, followed by a practical demonstration of the techniques she employs. This special event, lasting approximately 40 minutes, will be followed by a complimentary breakfast, offering a pleasant opportunity for discussion. You will also have the possibility to bring books you may wish to have restored at a later date. This complimentary event, upon prior reservation, is organized at the initiative of Alexia Taiclet, Head of the Books & Manuscripts Department.

Claire-Joëlle Hullin de Boischevalier

Trained with renowned institutions and specialists, notably at the Atelier d’Arts Appliqués du Vésinet and the Centre de restauration du patrimoine écrit, Claire-Joëlle Hullin de Boischevalier later obtained a CAP in bookbinding. Active since 2010, she now assists bibliophiles, collectors, and booksellers in preserving their works.

Thanks to her in-depth knowledge of rare books, their materials, and their manufacturing techniques, she is skilled in identifying signs of deterioration and implementing appropriate restoration methods, favoring traditional techniques and high-quality materials to preserve the authenticity of each work.

During this conference–workshop, she will present her expertise, the main types of damage encountered, as well as the techniques used to restore bindings and graphic documents, clean books, and ensure their long-term preservation.
