India and Bronze: A Rich Swiss Collection
Wednesday, April 29, 2pm
Originating from the collection of Josef R. Belmont (1886–1981), this ensemble of nearly 90 Indian and Nepalese bronzes, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, reflects the discerning eye of an enlightened collector, shaped through direct contact with the subcontinent, where he resided for several decades. Based in Bombay from 1920 to 1940, Belmont developed a deep sensitivity to Indian art, whose formal and spiritual richness he greatly appreciated.
A prominent figure in Basel’s economic and cultural life, closely connected to museum circles, he assembled a highly coherent collection guided by a refined taste and a particular attention to the quality of the works. These bronzes illustrate a remarkably rich pantheon, including major figures such as Vishnu, Parvati, Krishna Venugopala, as well as smaller representations of Shiva Nataraja. Smaller figures set against mandorlas, of a more artisanal character and commonly referred to as “jungle bronzes,” depict numerous forms of Bhairava, Hanuman, and Durga Mahishasuramardini. A few Jain figures—another religion originating in India—are also included. The collection furthermore features ritual objects such as spoons, bells, and oil lamps.
Passed down through direct descent, the collection stands out today for its authenticity and unity, offering a rare insight into the perspective of a leading European collector on the arts of India in the mid-20th century. It will be presented to prospective bidders on Wednesday, April 29 from 2 p.m. at Tajan.
