In the shadows of the 1980s underground art scene and the highlightened personnalities of Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Richard Hambleton began his urban creations by faking on the walls of New York some drawing crime scenes or threatening shadows watching on Big Apple streets. He is one of the first street-artists to be approached by New York gallery owners. He created first on urban supports but then, he uses to work on canvas too. Major artist of urban art and recognized in the 1980s, he was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in 1984 and 1985, and participated to the Venice Biennale in 1984 and 1988. Forgotten for a while, an extraordinary retrospective supported by Giorgio Armani was made in 2018 which travelled from London to New York, via Milan, Cannes and Moscow.
