Art déco Luxury Objects – Collection of Monsieur de C.
The inaugural sale “Art Deco Luxury Objects – Collection of Monsieur de C.” achieved strong success, confirming collectors’ enthusiasm for the refined decorative arts of the 1920s and 1930s.
Pieces in black lacquer and eggshell, emblematic of the Art Deco aesthetic, attracted particular attention, beginning with the rare Dunhill pocket lighter (circa 1925), sold for €1,377, the “Triangles” vanity set, which achieved €2,492, and the black, red and eggshell lacquer box by Jean Dunand (1877–1942), which reached €2,099.
Houses associated with writing instruments and the decorative arts of fire also performed strongly, including the small Waterman’s and Jif box, sold for €2,361, the Waterman fountain pen and mechanical pencil set at €1,640, and the Cartier retractable-nib fountain pen in black ebonite and “Shou” lacquer, hammered down at €1,062. Lancel emerged as one of the pillars of the sale, with a remarkable group of lighters, cigarette cases and coordinated sets, notably the rare “Fireworks” desk lighter, which peaked at €8,528, along with several sets and pocket lighters exceeding €2,000. The alarm-clock lighters in alligator and shagreen also stood out, selling for €3,739 and €4,657 respectively. Finally, the bakelite bracket clock, sold for €2,296, completed this coherent and highly decorative ensemble.
This sale highlights the strong appeal of Art Deco luxury objects, where quality of craftsmanship, mastery of materials (lacquer, eggshell, shagreen, bakelite) and the signatures of major houses (Dunhill, Jean Dunand, Waterman, Cartier, Lancel) play a decisive role. The success of lighters and desk accessories underscores the growing interest in objects that are at once functional, decorative and historically significant, embodying the sophisticated lifestyle of the interwar period.
